West Elk District Office

The District

 The West Elk school district is comprised of three school building complexes. There are two elementary schools and one junior-senior high school. The elementary schools (grades preschool thru 6th) are located in the cities of Moline and Severy. The junior-senior high school is located in Howard. Approximately 383 students attend the schools. The elementary average class size is 13 students for a teacher-student ratio of 7-1. The high school averages approximately 30 students per class. Average number of students in each classroom is 15. The school district encompasses 541 square mile and buses all students who desire transportation to their school site. To support educational programs, upgrades, and building needs the 3.6 million dollar general fund budget of the district is further enhanced by a Local Option Budget and a Capital Outlay Levy.

 
 
 
 

School Accreditation

 The West Elk schools are accredited by the state of Kansas under the NCLB or No Child Left Behind program. Students receive a quality education that will allow them to work or compete with other students.  

 

 

 
 
 

District Goals & Objectives

 The mission of the West Elk school district is to provide students opportunities to meet individual interests, needs, and abilities. The District also provides a learning climate where all students will have the opportunity to develop their potential as self-sufficient human beings and as responsible citizens in a changing society.

  3. Develop creative problem solving and higher order thinking skills.
  4. Develop Math, Science, and Technology techniques.

  8. Develop curriculum improvement to promote academic achievement by all students.

West Elk Jr./Sr. High School commons

 

District Administration

 The District Administration Office is centrally located in Howard. The District Office houses the Superintendent, Clerk/Business Manager, Board Treasurer/Secretary, Food Service Supervisor, and Transportation Supervisor. Also, there are offices for the Special Education Cooperative Director, Secretarial staff and Special Education Secretary.

 

 

Student Athletic/ Activity League Affiliation

The West Elk Jr-Sr High School is a member of the South Central Border League. This league consists of the following 11 schools: Argonia, Caldwell, Cedar Vale, Central, Dexter, Elk Valley, Oxford, Sedan, South Haven, Udall, and West Elk. The purpose of the league is to organize, regulate, and promote inter-school extracurricular student activities.

The West Elk Jr-Sr High School is also a member of the Kansas State High School Activities Association. Currently its enrollment in grades 10-12 classifies it as a 2A school for post season competition.
