Principal’s Corner

The 2013-2014 School year is underway! Our enrollment has increased and we look forward to what this year has in store! We offer an experienced staff who share the common goal of success. I encourage you to be involved with your school and if we can do something for you, please let us know.

I had the opportunity to attend a conference on Bullying and School Discipline this summer. I hope the things that I learned will benefit this school by teaching young people to treat each other with respect and dignity. Parents play an important role in this journey as well. Many times misbehavior stems from other issues that when acknowledged can help the situation immensely. I have had great support from most parents and I thank you all for that benefit.

The theme that I have adopted for myself and West Elk is “Prepare to make a difference”! That is my daily goal as we embark on this journey together and we need community support to reach this destination. I understand that there are a lot of changes coming. The College and Career Ready Standards of Kansas will be a driving force in educational change. I believe they will make a difference for our young people and their contribution to society, but the path to get there will be difficult, long, and stressful. Your child will be asked to do things that used to be taught in much higher grade levels, for example. I know that the West Elk family will not only endure, but we will exceed the expectations proposed. It will take time and it won’t be easy, but together with parents, students and patrons, we will make a difference.

As always, feel free to contact us if you have any concerns, celebrations, or suggestions!
